Jane Austen Tours, Lyme Regis & Environs
We offer extended Jane Austen tours around Lyme Regis and the environs. See Lyme Regis and other areas (depending on your choice) from the book and films of Persuasion. Locations include parts of the Undercliff National Nature Reserve, known as the South West Coast Path, Pinny and even Charmouth. Please contact us to arrange a time.
Why not walk to the 'green chasms' of Pinny mentioned in Persuasion? Here's Austen's description of Pinny which sits in the most jungle like of nature reserves in the UK. It's a wonderful place that runs alongside the sea:
'Above all, Pinny, with its green chasms between romantic rocks, where the scattered forest trees and orchards of luxuriant growth, declare that many a generation must have passed away since the first partial falling of the cliff prepared the ground for such a state, where a scene so wonderful and so lovely is exhibited, as may more than equal any of the resembling scenes of the far-famed Isle of Wight: these places must be visited, and visited again, to make the worth of Lyme understood.
Alternatively, take a walk to Uplyme, which Austen also mentions in Persuasion as:
'the woody varieties of the cheerful village of Up Lyme.'
Austen also speaks highly of Charmouth:
'The scenes in its neighbourhood, Charmouth, with its high grounds and extensive sweeps of country, and still more its sweet, retired bay, backed by dark cliffs, where fragments of low rock among the sands make it the happiest spot for watching the flow of the tide, for sitting in unwearied contemplation.'
You can also visit Golden Cap which is one of the filming locations from Persuasion and the highest point on the south coast of England. With absolutely breathtaking views, this really is worth the walk!
Lastly, why not take in the neighbouring town of Sidmouth, which we know Jane Austen visited, or perhaps Colyton, the home of a childhood friend.
These tours are available year round and can include various other activities such as a talk by one of Jane Austen's relations, Museum entry, lunch, fossil hunting, cream tea in the Cobb buildings (which are otherwise inaccessible to the general public). Prices to suit all budgets.

'One of the best day tours I can ever remember, with your particularly charming and knowledgeable guiding being central to that. The weather definitely helped, but it is also a lovely and interesting town, among the most interesting English seaside towns I know.'
'Some one just asked me what the highlight of my annual trip to Bath was this year. And after careful thought, it was my day trip to Lyme Regis with you. You did a marvellous job. Even before the trip started, your email with the detailed itinerary and map was very useful to prepare myself for the day. I enjoyed your guided walk with references to where Jane Austen stayed and what locales she may have used in Persuasion, and the debunking of myths about Harville's house etc. There was just the right amount of time for lunch and wandering on our own before the cream tea with Mrs Shrevington's daughter. How thrilling to see the personal articles of Jane - the handwork on her fichu was incredible.'
'What a wonderful experience! Natalie was very welcoming and made every effort to give us an informative and interesting tour based on our needs. Obviously well researched by Natalie who has a wealth of local knowledge and a real enthusiasm and passion for her work. Really glad we found her and will definitely be rebooking should we revisit Dorset in the future.'
